Hiidenkirnu is the Finnish for Giant's kettle or Glacial pothole.
This piece of art glass is a creation by famous Finnish designer Timo Sarpaneva in the 50s.

This is a very enchanting piece with a velvety surface. It is made of clear glass that is matted by dipping the item in strong acid.

Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006), is one of Finland's most famous art glass designers. His pioneering glass work has received much recognition internationally and he has been awarded several times for his stunning art glass designs. He is the man who in 1954 got famous for having created "the most beautiful item in the world" according to House Beautiful -magazine. (That was the Orchid that was on show at the Triennal in Milan 1954)

This item has one small circular imperfection at the upper border.
The overall impression of this delicate piece is still very good, and the imperfection looks from most angles like an air bubble situated just under the surface and it can not be felt on the surface. However this item is unsigned.

On the last pictures you see Giant's kettle together with the related Giant's fist, which also is an acid treated item created by Timo Sarpaneva. The Giant's fist is for sale elsewhere on this site.
