The Orchid (3568) is an art glass sculpture designed by young Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006) in 1953, for which design he was awarded a "Grand Prix" at the Milan Triennale in 1954. House and Beautiful magazine declared the Orchid the most beautiful object in the world that same year! In 1957 Timo Sarpaneva was awarded again in Milan for new glass designs of his.
The Orchid is one of the icons of Finnish glass design, and has since been produced in several sizes.
This particular impressive sized and facet polished Orchid is of an early production. These type of large Orchids that are facet polished are specially sought for and much more rarely for sale. This piece is 34,5cm tall and weighs 3,53 kg! It is hand made at Iittala glass factory in the 1950s. Most of the vintage red Iittala i-icon label is still in place. This piece is exceptionally well preserved for over 60 years as it doesn't have any chips, cracks or nicks on it.
