A cute and playful mouth blown Octopus glass figure in thick blue glass and with big eyes by designer Päivi Koskell. The the shades in light blue with the decorations in white and green might give a fairy tale impression. Only one piece like this was made, so it surely is unique. "In my works I want to capture some strong moment or feeling, to stop people from analysing and make them feel instead"
This is an early piece by Päivi Koskell, who is a contemporary Finnish designer born in 1977 in Kuopio in Finland. After studying several different art genres she fell in love with working with glass at the beginning of the century and learnt several different techniques. She finished her glass blower's education in 2003. Apart from working with glass in Finland she also spent time working with glass in Sweden in 2003-2005.
She has made several large sized glass statues. In those she liked to combine several techniques. Her flat glass creations have also gained interest.
Nowadays Päivi mainly concentrates on ceramics.
This octopus creation was a playful design that she has blown herself at a glass hut at Töysä in Finland in 2004. She named the figure "Coleoidea", which is the name for the taxonomic category to which the octopuses belong. To emphasize the playfulness that was associated with making this piece she wrote the latter part of the name in bald letters = iDEA (see the photo of the signature).
To give an impression of the size of this figure we show you this glass figure together with a Suvisirri bird designed by Oiva Toikka on the last picture.
