By 2010 Oiva Toikka had been employed at Iittala glass factory for 50 years. To honour this he designed two technically very demanding glass birds, the Fiskariina and the Knitter. In order to succeed in making these birds the glass blower had to have a trained eye, a perfectly steady hand, and precise timing to get the very difficult pattern and appearance of these birds come out right.
The name Fiskariina is a construction and refers to something like a fisher-woman, but at the same time it relates to Fiskars, the company that owns Iittala. And the metallic beak probably represents a pair of scissors, one of Fiskar's most well known products. Fiskariina is a bird in clear glass decorated with a black net work, the fisher's net (?). Once again we can witness the lively playful creativity of Oiva Toikka.
This individual is a handsome large sized bird that comes in the original box!
