Fire Bird was the second bird for Finnish Book Store by Oiva Toikka in 1982. It is hand made in the legendary Nuutajärvi glass village in Finland.
Suomalainen Kirjakauppa commissoned one bird each year in 1981-1983. These early three Bookstore birds, Blue Bird, Fire Bird and Green Bird, are rarely seen for sale. These first three birds were in years 1990-2018 followed by no less than 25 birds that also were commisssioned by Suomalainen Kirjakauppa but for distribution through their on line Book Club (SSKK = Suuri Suomalainen Kirjakerho).
This bird is of bright red, lucent glass that turns into a yellowish orange tone towards the bottom. It has broad, lustered bands all over the body except for the front part and the underside. The bird is numbered 461/500.
This is yet another example of a bird from the early production, with nice features. It is fun to watch for clues to the name of the bird in the design.
On the last photo we pictured this bird together with a Blue Bird for SSKK from 1981, which was the very first commissioned bird for SSKK.
