Whip Poor Will was created for the Birds of Passage collection in 1991-1997. You can find the 12 birds of passage on pages 32-35 in the "Birds by Toikka" book, and on pages 76-78 in "In Oiva's Wonderland".
Whip Poor Will is still in production at Iittala.
The color for Whip Poor Will was obviously inspired by the colors of young willow. And the habitus at least of the early birds resembles other scaupduck-like creations by Toikka. The English name for this bird, Whip Poor Will seems like yet another expression of Toikka's playfulness.
This individual in very nice shades of green is an early one, which can be seen from the type of signature it bears. It is made at the glass hut in Nuutajärvi, Finland before the sand etched signatures were taken into use.
On the last pictures you see this bird together with its friend from the same series, the Untuviklo bird.
