A numbered series of only 400 hand signed ruby red 160mm Aalto vases were in production between 1991-1997. From 1999 onwards this vase was produced without numbering until 2005 when the production was ceased. The ruby red technique was challenging and as a result the ruby red Aalto vases were way more expensive than for instance the clear ones. In 2005 the list price for a clear one was 89,90€ and for a ruby red one was 847€!
In 2007-2014 a slightly different bright red version of the 160mm Aalto vase was introduced. This was produced by another, more economic recipe, and the chemicals used for the red color are different. The list price for this version was feasible 199 euro.
The Aalto vase designed by famous architect Alvar Aalto is an icon of Finnish design. The first version of it was presented in 1936 and got much attention at the Paris World Fair in 1937. Since then the Aalto vase in many different sizes and versions has conquered the hearts of many generations world wide. It is produced in several different colors. The elegantly folding glass is a perfect example of Alvar Aalto's free flowing imagination.
The vases are still today mouth blown into a mold at the Iittala glass factory in Finland. The production of one vase goes through 12 work stages, and every single Aalto vase is hand made.
