This vintage art glass set consists of four glass pieces: a large plate, a large bowl, a smaller but higher bowl and a vase. The set is designed by Alvar and Aino Aalto together and is called Kukka alias Flower, and was first presented at the World Expo in New York in 1939.
The elegantly folding glass is typical of Alvar Aalto's glass design.
The classy pieces of the Flower are designed to be useful when having guests and there is need for different shaped serving plates, bowls or a vase. Other times these large items are practically and neatly stacked, but kept visible in the home in form of the impressive and decorative glass Flower that it is! A genius multipurpose design.
It is rare to find this flower with all original pieces well preserved.
In this Flower, the items are in very good vintage condition, no cracks nor nicks. The largest, undermost plate has some inevitable superficial scratches on the underside from moving the quite heavy flower around. There are a couple of small air bubbles seen in the largest plate. These are situated well within the glass, not extending to the surface, so they merely enhance the vintage perception of this piece of art as air bubbles were common in those days. This big undermost plate is hand signed ALVAR AALTO and numbered 308/1988. The other three items are signed ALVAR AALTO, and they have only very minimal wear.
