A Boletus mushroom, 'Tatti' in Finnish. Iittala model nr 3552.
A beautiful vintage piece made in thick, clear, comb cut glass that refracts light in a nice way.
This item is part of a series of items designed by Tapio Wirkkala in the 1940s with characteristic line and comb cut decorations on clear glass. There are many different shaped vases and bowls that all represent variations of this technique. Of these items the Chantarelle vases and Mushroom bowls are some of the more wanted pieces of art glass among collectors.
Tapio Wirkkala felt that materials have their own specific qualities that dictate the artistic process. He was a very productive designer, who designed in many different materials (wood, metal, glass...). He was very skilled with his hands and often made the prototype of the creation himself. He said that his task as an artist was to free the inner potential of each material.
In the last pictures you see this mushroom together with a larger one of ours and also with a large Chantarelle.
