The Feather vase (3122) is a typical example of a Wirkkala creation that is inspired by nature. There are several creations by Wirkkala with variations of this same theme, but this model is really very feather like, so the name is very appropriate. The vase is made of mold-blown crystal that has a comb-cut back and smooth front surface (or vice versa depending on how you like to see it).
The vase is in a good condition, only very minor signs of normal wear. There are some small light line reflections seen in the smooth part of the vase.
Tapio Wirkkala designed in a wide range of different materials. He said that materials have their own rules that dictate the artistic process. He often made the prototype of the creation by himself. He said that his task as an artist was to free the inner potential of each material.
