This is a vintage comb polished vase by Tapio Wirkkala from the 50s. The outside of this massive vase is comb-cut, and the inner side is smooth. The item is in a Very Good condition. There are some very tiny air bubbles within the wall of the vase, one is over one mm in diameter and is visible inside the vase.
The last two pictures show this vase together with item nr 3536 - a 6,2cm high bowl in the same style, and with a very cute comb cut 3,8cm cup. This vase stands on the left side in these pictures.
Other creations by Wirkkala with comb cut decoration are the Feather and Leaf art glass pieces. Nature was a very important source of inspiration for Wirkkala.
Tapio Wirkkala often made the prototypes of his creations by himself. He designed in a wide range of different materials. He said that the materials have their own rules that dictate the artistic process and his task as an artist was to free the inner potential of each material.
