This is a very cute comb polished miniature cup by Tapio Wirkkala. The design is from the mid 50s. The outside of this mini cup is comb-cut, and the inner side is smooth. The item is in an excellent condition. It is signed TAPIO WIRKKALA - IITTALA.
The last two pictures show this cup together with item nr 3535 - a vase in the same style, and the 3536 bowl. This miniature item stands to the right in these pictures.
Other creations by Wirkkala with comb cut decoration are the Feather and Leaf art glass pieces. Nature was a very important source of inspiration for Wirkkala.
Tapio Wirkkala often made the prototypes of his creations by himself. He designed in a wide range of different materials. He said that the materials have their own rules that dictate the artistic process and his task as an artist was to free the inner potential of each material.
