This Chantarelle vase was made at Iittala glass factory in 2014. It is of a reproduction by Iittala of the iconic Chantarelle vase by Tapio Wirkkala. The vase is in a very good condition. It only has one small snow flake like imperfection in the right quadrant on the ninth line counted from the centerline going through the 'beak'. Among the pictures there is one close up view of this and the spot is also outlined with red in one of the pictures as it otherwise can be difficult to find in the pictures.

Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985), the multitalented Finnish design genius designed in a wide range of different materials. Nature was a very important source of inspiration for Wirkkala. He spent a lot of time at his cottage in Lapland observing nature. Tapio Wirkkala’s Chantarelle vase got its name and shape from the chanterelle mushrooms that grow in the forests of Finland.

The surface decorations, particularly the decorative lines that are cut in different depths to produce a relief effect, initially proved difficult for the glassblowers at the Iittala factory to make. Wirkkala, however, collaborated with the glass craftsmen and helped them succeed in mastering this.  First a series of 75 individually numbered Chantarelles were made in 1946. Chantarelle items in different sizes and shapes were then produced at Iittala between 1947 and 1960. At the Triennale exhibitions in Milan in 1951 and 1954 different sizes of line cut items were exhibited and Wirkkala von multiple Grand Prizes.
