Nature obviously was a very important source of inspiration for Wirkkala. The Feather and Leaf art glass pieces are examples of Wirkkalas creations that are inspired by nature. There are also several other creations by Wirkkala with comb cut decoration.

The back of these pieces are comb-cut, and the up-side (or inner side) is smooth.
These art works are massive and heavy. This model was designed in 1954 and it was presented at the Milan Triennale in 1954 where Wirkkala won first price for his glass works and achieved international breakthrough. The Feather or Sulka in Finnish have the model numbers 3369 and 3869.

This vintage Feather Art Glass piece from 1955 is in very good condition with only minor normal wear. No chips or cracks, a small air bubble deep within the glass, shown on a close up view.

Tapio Wirkkala designed in a wide range of different materials. He said that materials have their own rules that dictate the artistic process. He often made the prototype of his creation by himself. He said that his task as an artist was to free the inner potential of each material.
