Timo Sarpaneva was asked to design vases for the new residency for the President of Finland. In 1992 the Marcel vases were designed, and the production of these started.
Mäntyniemi, the new residency was ready in 1993.
The vases are designed to be used for flower displays, and were produced also for selling at Iittala shops.
They have a frosted oval surface that serves as back frame for the flower arrangement, and gives the arrangement style and harmony. Also the bottom of the vase is frosted while the rest of the surfaces of the vase are clear.
Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006), is one of Finland's most famous art glass designers.
His pioneering glass work has received much recognition internationally and he has been awarded several times for his stunning art glass designs.

A: The bigger one is 18,7cm high and 17,7cm wide.
This piece is signed: TIMO SARPANEVA IITTALA and bears an additional engraving for Vantaa city on the underside. This vase has plenty of insignificant wear at the bottom.
Otherwise the vase is faultless. Good used condition.
B: Smaller vase, 10cm high and 8cm wide.
Unsigned. Very Good condition. (sold out)
C: Smaller vase, 10cm high and 8cm wide.
Signed: TS IITTALA 2000 and bears an Iittala sticker.
It has a tiny nick on the underside of the wing, at the edge of it.
This shows, if inspected very closely, as a darker spot, marked out on the close up view.
The rest of the vase is completely flawless.
