The production of the black Aalto vase started 1986 and continued until 2000.
The vase is signed ALVAR AALTO. All the Black Aalto vases of this era have a slight bluish tone to them which is best seen when looking at the inside corners. It is bluish black like the Finnish winter sky on an early bright evening.
It weighs 1,5kg. There is hardly any wear on visible parts of this vase, but on the underside there is wear from moving the heavy vase on surfaces.
The Aalto vase designed by famous architect Alvar Aalto is an icon of Finnish design. The first versions of it was presented in 1936 and these got much attention at the Paris World Fair in 1937. Since then the Aalto vase, in many different sizes and color versions, has conquered the hearts of many generations world wide. The elegantly folding glass is a perfect example of Alvar Aalto's free flowing imagination.
The vases are still today mouth blown into a mold at the Iittala glass factory in Finland. The production of one vase goes through 12 work stages, and every single Aalto vase is hand made.
On the last picture you see this vase together with a large white bowl, which actually is part of the Kukka (=Flower) design which consist of four glass pieces: a large plate a large bowl a smaller but higher bowl and a vase. These can practically be stacked on each other and then they form an impressive glass flower.
